A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1 Commemorating the bicentennial of the Pennsylvania Prison 2 Society; and declaring the week of May 3 through 9, 1987, as 3 "Pennsylvania Prison Society Week." 4 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Prison Society was founded in 1787
1 as the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of 2 Public Prisons, to monitor conditions at the Walnut Street Jail; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, The Society was the initiator of the first 5 penitentiary in the world with the establishment of separate 6 confinement as opposed to public humiliation; and 7 WHEREAS, The Society fostered the establishment of separate 8 facilities for women, children and the mentally insane; and 9 WHEREAS, The Society pioneered the concept and practice of 10 prison visitation; and 11 WHEREAS, The Society helped develop the Philadelphia 12 Defender's Association by advocating for legal counsel for 13 indigent offenders; and 14 WHEREAS, The Society continues its historic role of 15 monitoring prison conditions and advocating for humane treatment 16 through its educational projects, direct services and volunteer 17 force; therefore be it 18 RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly 19 hereby commemorates the achievements and the continued need of 20 the work carried forth by the Pennsylvania Prison Society during 21 its 200th Anniversary; and be it further 22 RESOLVED, That the General Assembly hereby declares the week 23 of May 3 through 9, 1987, as "Pennsylvania Prison Society Week"; 24 and be it further 25 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be immediately 26 transmitted to the Pennsylvania Prison Society.
