                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of April 27, 1927 (P.L.465, No.299), entitled,
     2     as amended, "An act to provide for the safety of persons
     3     employed, housed, or assembled in certain buildings and
     4     structures not in cities of the first class, second class,
     5     and second class A, by requiring certain construction and
     6     ways of egress, equipment, and maintenance; providing for the
     7     licensing of projectionists, except in cities of the first
     8     class and second class; requiring the submission of plans for
     9     examination and approval; providing for the promulgation of
    10     rules and regulations for the enforcement of this act;
    11     providing for the enforcement of this act by the Department
    12     of Labor and Industry and, in certain cases, by the chiefs of
    13     fire departments in cities of the third class; providing
    14     penalties for violations of the provisions of this act; and
    15     repealing certain acts," providing for specialized smoke
    16     detectors for the deaf and hearing impaired in lodging
    17     houses, hotels and motels.

    18     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    19  hereby enacts as follows:
    20     Section 1.  The act of April 27, 1927 (P.L.465, No.299),
    21  referred to as the Fire and Panic Act, is amended by adding a
    22  section to read:
    23     Section 3.1.  Smoke Detectors for the Hearing Impaired.--In
    24  addition to such other rules and regulations as the Department


     1  of Labor and Industry shall adopt relating to the locations,
     2  types and number of smoke detectors required in the several
     3  classes of buildings covered by this act, it shall require that
     4  specialized smoke detectors for the deaf or hearing impaired, of
     5  a type approved by the department, be made available in public
     6  lodging houses, hotels and motels for the use of such guests as
     7  shall request and have need of their use. Notice of the
     8  availability of specialized smoke detectors for the deaf and
     9  hearing impaired shall be posted in the area of guest
    10  registration. The lodging house, hotel or motel shall maintain
    11  at least one such specialized smoke detector for each fifty
    12  dwelling units, with a maximum of ten and a minimum of two
    13  specialized smoke detectors for each such lodging house, hotel
    14  or motel. Guests shall not be charged for the use of such
    15  specialized smoke detectors, but a refundable deposit may be
    16  required for their use. The Department of Labor and Industry
    17  shall, by regulation, determine the lodging houses to which this
    18  section shall be applicable.
    19     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
