                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," establishing eligibility requirements
     6     for participation in extracurricular activities.

     7     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     8  hereby enacts as follows:
     9     Section 1.  Article XIII of the act of March 10, 1949
    10  (P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949, is
    11  amended by adding a subdivision to read:
    12                           ARTICLE XIII.
    13                       PUPILS AND ATTENDANCE.

    15         (h)  Participation in Extracurricular Activities.
    16     Section 1396.  Eligibility Requirements for Participation in
    17  Extracurricular Activities.--(a)  A student enrolled in any
    18  school in this Commonwealth may be suspended from participation
    19  in any extracurricular activity sponsored or sanctioned by the


     1  school after a grade reporting period in which the student
     2  received a grade lower than the equivalent of seventy (70) on a
     3  scale of one hundred (100) in any academic class. The
     4  administrator of the school may remove this suspension if the
     5  class is an identified honors or advanced class. A student may
     6  not be suspended from participation in extracurricular
     7  activities under this section during the period in which school
     8  is recessed for the summer or during the initial grade reporting
     9  period of a regular school term on the basis of grades received
    10  in the final grade reporting period of the preceding regular
    11  school term.
    12     (b)  The Department of Education may adopt regulations to
    13  assist school administrators in carrying out the provisions of
    14  this section.
    15     (c)  All rules and regulations relating to extracurricular
    16  activities adopted by boards of school directors pursuant to
    17  section 511 of this act shall comply with this section.
    18     (d)  As used in this section, the term "extracurricular
    19  activity" means athletics, games of any kind, school
    20  publications, and debating, forensic, dramatic, musical or other
    21  activities which are not required as a part of the regular
    22  academic program.
    23     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
