HOUSE RESOLUTION

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, OCTOBER 22, 1985

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Condemning the U.S.S.R. for the invasion of Afghanistan.

     2     WHEREAS, The Soviet Union invaded the country of Afghanistan
     3  in December, 1979, despite recently completed military and
     4  economic agreements with that country; and
     5     WHEREAS, The Soviets have brought physical harm to millions
     6  of innocent Afghan people; and
     7     WHEREAS, The Soviets, in violation of the United Nations
     8  convention signed by the U.S.S.R. in 1981, have continued the
     9  use of weapons aimed particularly against civilians in
    10  Afghanistan; and
    11     WHEREAS, The Soviets, in their campaign of starvation to
    12  destroy Afghan resistance, have severely damaged the ability of
    13  Afghanistan to provide agricultural commodities for its people
    14  and have caused famine in Afghanistan; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives oppose the Soviet
    16  military invasion of Afghanistan and its physical subjugation of
    17  the country's people, and direct the Chief Clerk to transmit a

     1  copy of this resolution to the Department of State, United
     2  States of America; and be it further
     3     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives welcome Afghan
     4  patriot Abdul Halim Shams to Mercer County, in the Commonwealth
     5  of Pennsylvania, on October 23, 1985.
