AN ACT 1 Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An 2 act relating to the public school system, including certain 3 provisions applicable as well to private and parochial 4 schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the 5 laws relating thereto," establishing eligibility requirements 6 for participation in extracurricular activities. 7 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 8 hereby enacts as follows: 9 Section 1. Article XIII of the act of March 10, 1949 10 (P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949, is 11 amended by adding a subdivision to read: 12 ARTICLE XIII. 13 PUPILS AND ATTENDANCE. 14 * * * 15 (h) Participation in Extracurricular Activities. 16 Section 1396. Eligibility Requirements for Participation in 17 Extracurricular Activities.--(a) A student enrolled in any 18 school in this Commonwealth shall be suspended from 19 participation in any extracurricular activity sponsored or
1 sanctioned by the school during the grade reporting period after 2 a grade reporting period in which the student received a grade 3 lower than the equivalent of seventy (70) on a scale of one 4 hundred (100) in any academic class. The administrator of the 5 school may remove this suspension if the class is an identified 6 honors or advanced class. A student may not be suspended from 7 participation in extracurricular activities under this section 8 during the period in which school is recessed for the summer or 9 during the initial grade reporting period of a regular school 10 term on the basis of grades received in the final grade 11 reporting period of the preceding regular school term. 12 (b) The Department of Education may adopt regulations to 13 assist school administrators in carrying out the provisions of 14 this section and may, when deemed appropriate, make special 15 provisions for exceptional children. 16 (c) All rules and regulations relating to extracurricular 17 activities adopted by boards of school directors pursuant to 18 section 511 of this act shall comply with this section. 19 (d) As used in this section, the term "extracurricular 20 activity" means athletics, games of any kind, school 21 publications, and debating, forensic, dramatic, musical or other 22 activities which are not required as a part of the regular 23 academic program. 24 Section 2.
