AN ACT 1 Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated 2 Statutes, further providing for school vehicles. 3 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 4 hereby enacts as follows: 5 Section 1. Section 4553(b) of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania 6 Consolidated Statutes is amended to read: 7 § 4553. General requirements for other vehicles transporting 8 school children. 9 * * * 10 (b) Other vehicles.--A motor vehicle used to transport 11 children to or from school or in connection with school 12 activities, which is not a school bus because of its limited 13 seating capacity, shall comply with regulations established by 14 the department for such vehicles. [Unless required by Federal 15 law or regulation, the] Such vehicles may, at the option of the 16 school district owning the vehicles or contracting privately for 17 their use, be equipped with flashing red and amber lights. This
1 equipment shall conform to those regulations which may be issued 2 by the department under this subsection. Notwithstanding any 3 other provisions of law, such vehicles which are required by 4 school districts to be equipped with flashing red and amber 5 lights in accordance with this subsection shall be considered 6 school buses for purposes of section 3345. The option given 7 school districts under this subsection shall not apply to such 8 vehicles which pick up and discharge school children only at 9 locations off the highway. The regulations established by the 10 department shall not require vehicles which pick up and 11 discharge school children only at locations off the highway to 12 be of any particular color or to display flashing red and amber 13 lights, unless required by Federal law or regulation. 14 Section 2.
