PRINTER'S NO. 2773

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF PENNSYLVANIA

HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 210 Session of 1984

INTRODUCED BY IRVIS, APRIL 25, 1984

REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, APRIL 25, 1984

                                  A RESOLUTION

1 Memorializing the Congress of the United States to enact
2 legislation to remedy the problems of the ailing United
     3 States Steel Industry.

4 WHEREAS, The well-being of many citizens of Pennsylvania
5 depends upon the health of the steel industry; and
6 WHEREAS, Without steel, the United States' reputation as an
7 industrial Nation is greatly diminished, and its military
8 defense is severely harmed; and
9 WHEREAS, The United States Steel Corporation has led the
10 entire American steel industry with practices that have been
11 disastrous for the prosperity and security of the Nation; and
12 WHEREAS, The United States Steel Corporation has not
13 adequately invested in modern productive capacity, instead using
14 capital to invest in corporate takeovers while moving out of the
    15 steel business; and
16 WHEREAS, These policies have made the American steel industry
17 obsolete, closed down many steel mills, and laid off numerous
18 steel workers since 1979, destroying our economic well-being and

1 threatening our national security; therefore be it
2 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
3 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania hereby memorialize the Congress of
     4  the United States to enact legislation remedying this problem;
     5 and be it further
6 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be immediately
7 transmitted to the presiding officers of each house of Congress
8 and to the majority and minority leaders of each house of
9 Congress and to each member of Congress from Pennsylvania.
