A RESOLUTION 1 Memorializing Congress to nationalize the oil, steel, coal, rail 2 and transportation industries. 3 WHEREAS, The General Assembly of Pennsylvania has recorded by 4 law its intent that domestically produced steel products be 5 given preference over imported steel products in government 6 contracts; and 7 WHEREAS, American steel workers have accepted harsh cutbacks 8 in their pay scale and other fringe benefits; and 9 WHEREAS, In spite of these economic sacrifices by its 10 workers, United States Steel Corporation has contracted with a 11 British government-subsidized steel manufacturer to provide a 12 plant in Bucks County for producing finished steel products from 13 slabs imported from the British Isles; and 14 WHEREAS, Major steel companies own substantial ore reserves 15 abroad and numerous coal mines in Pennsylvania; and 16 WHEREAS, Conrail, which has enjoyed substantial tax credits 17 from Pennsylvania and the Federal Government, has discontinued
1 various commuter services to the detriment of the public; and 2 WHEREAS, Conrail employees have suffered significant wage and 3 benefit reductions in their nationwide contracts; and 4 WHEREAS, Petroleum companies in this country, through 5 arrangements with foreign oil cartels, helped to impose serious 6 hardships on the American public by sharp increases in the cost 7 of heating and motor fuels; and 8 WHEREAS, United States Steel Corporation with the help of 9 Federal tax credits has acquired a major oil producing firm; and 10 WHEREAS, It is obvious that these industries are not acting 11 in the best interests of the citizens of Pennsylvania and of the 12 United States; therefore be it 13 RESOLVED, That the Pennsylvania House of Representatives 14 memorialize the Congress of the United States to take immediate 15 steps to nationalize the oil, steel, coal and rail 16 transportation industries in America; and be it further 17 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 18 the presiding officers of each house of Congress and to each 19 member of Congress from Pennsylvania.
