1 Amending Title 71 (State Government) of the Pennsylvania
2 Consolidated Statutes, providing for continuation of group
3 life insurance benefits; and making repeals.

4 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5 hereby enacts as follows:
6 Section 1. Title 71 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
7 Statutes is amended by adding a section to read:
     8 § 5711. Group life insurance.
9 (a) Continuation of benefits.--Subject to the provisions of
10 subsection (d), any annuitant who has been insured under a group
11 life insurance policy provided by the Commonwealth for a period
12 of at least five years prior to becoming entitled to an annuity
13 shall, upon payment of the appropriate premium, be eligible to
14 continue coverage in the amount of $5,000 under the group life
15 insurance policy for as long as the member lives.
16 (b) Amount of premium.--The amount of the premium payable by
17 an annuitant who elects coverage under subsection (a) shall be
18 prorated based on the premium paid by the Commonwealth for group

     1 life insurance.
2 (c) Deduction from annuity.--The annuitant may elect to have
3 the amount of the premium deducted from his annuity.
4 (d) Eligible members.--Any member who becomes entitled to
5 receive an annuity or who became entitled to receive an annuity
6 on and after January 1, 1980 shall be eligible to elect the
7 coverage provided for in this section. In the case of a member
8 who became entitled to receive an annuity on and after January

10 date the member became entitled to receive an annuity to the
11 date of application for insurance coverage under this section
12 shall be required. The amount of the accrued premium may be paid
13 in a lump sum or, at the election of the member, may be made
14 from deductions in the member's annuity spread over a reasonable
    15 period of time.
    16 Section 2. (a) Specific repeal.--The following act is
17 repealed insofar as it is inconsistent with this act:
