In the House of Representatives, May 4, 1982 1 WHEREAS, The State of Pennsylvania gave birth to the American 2 popular song through the melodies and lyrics of Stephen Collins 3 Foster; and 4 WHEREAS, American popular music is now generally accepted 5 throughout the world as a legitimate art form; and 6 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania continues to contribute to the growth 7 of American music through the efforts of men and women, past and 8 present; and 9 WHEREAS, Fred Waring brought choral music to new heights, and 10 Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Les Brown, Vaughn Monroe and Russ Morgan 11 were at the forefront of the big bands; and 12 WHEREAS, Errol Gardner gave jazz piano a new dimension, Oscar 13 Levant was the greatest Gershwin interpreter and Henry Mancini 14 continues to add to the growing American list of serious 15 composers; therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That a committee be formed, consisting of four 17 members of the majority party and three members of the minority
1 party and that this committee appoint an advisory board made up 2 of noted musicians from the State of Pennsylvania and native- 3 born Pennsylvanians living elsewhere; and be it further 4 RESOLVED, That the committee and its advisory board explore 5 the possibility of a Pennsylvania State Music Hall of Fame along 6 with the housing of a Hall of Fame in the Pennsylvania Museum 7 and the funding of such a project to determine if the venture 8 should be supported by State tax money or through other 9 vehicles; and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That the committee study and make recommendations 11 to the House of Representatives within six months.
