                         In the House of Representatives, March 25, 1980

     1     WHEREAS, January 26, 1980, was the 100th Anniversary of the
     2  birth of former General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur; and
     3     WHEREAS, General MacArthur was born on January 26, 1880, son
     4  of General Arthur MacArthur, and graduated first in his class
     5  and with highest honors at West Point; and
     6     WHEREAS, He distinguished himself in service to his country
     7  during World War I as a General at a very young age, having been
     8  decorated numerous times; and
     9     WHEREAS, General MacArthur valiantly defended Corregidor in
    10  the Philippine Islands, heroically promising and prophesying "I
    11  shall return." History recalls that he did return triumphant
    12  with freedom and dignity for the Philippine people; and
    13     WHEREAS, He showed himself a skillful architect of the


     1  occupation in Japan, nurturing the democratic spirit there in a
     2  most exemplary way, and exhibiting a masterful comprehension of
     3  our great American heritage of freedom and dignity for all men;
     4  now therefore be it
     5     RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the General Assembly
     6  of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania pay tribute on the occasion
     7  of the 100th Anniversary of his birth to one of the greatest
     8  Americans of all time, General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur,
     9  for the sense of purpose he conveyed to his own generation and
    10  the breadth of understanding, clarity of vision and spiritual
    11  perception he will yet transmit to posterity; and be it further
    12     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    13  his widow, Mrs. Douglas MacArthur, to his son, Arthur MacArthur
    14  IV and to the MacArthur Memorial Foundation in Norfolk,
    15  Virginia.
