HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 208 Session of 1980


        INTRODUCED BY MESSRS. J. L. WRIGHT, MANMILLER, PICCOLA, YAHNER,
           STUBAN, COHEN, KLINGAMAN, McKELVEY, RAPPAPORT, REED, DORR,
           A. C. FOSTER, BARBER, B. F. O'BRIEN, FREIND, MOEHLMANN AND
           SCHMITT, MARCH 18, 1980

        AS REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE ON RULES, HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
           AS AMENDED, APRIL 29, 1980

                         In the House of Representatives, March 18, 1980

     1     WHEREAS, The House Select Committee - TMI, has found that the
     2  disposal of radioactive waste from nuclear power plants is now a
     3  serious problem and will become more serious as more plants now
     4  under construction are put on line; and
     5     WHEREAS, The committee learned that there is great concern by
     6  the citizens residing in the areas down-river from TMI as to the
     7  disposal of substantial amounts of radioactive water into the
     8  Susquehanna River and the venting of radioactive gas into the
     9  atmosphere; therefore be it
    10     RESOLVED, That the General Assembly strongly urge the
    11  President of the United States, the Nuclear Regulatory
    12  Commission and the Congress to open the presently existing
    13  Federal radioactive waste disposal sites for commercial waste
    14  disposal; and be it further
    15     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives strongly urge the
    16  Nuclear Regulatory Commission to review existing facilities and

     1  proposals for the reprocessing of radioactive waste; and be it
     2  further
     3     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives continues to
     4  maintain its position that no contaminated water from TMI be
     5  dumped into the Susquehanna River and no radioactive gases be
     6  vented from TMI without proper controls and that the Nuclear
     7  Regulatory Commission continuously monitor the processing and
     8  ultimate disposal of water and gas from TMI; and be it further
     9     RESOLVED, THAT THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES REQUESTS THE       <--
    10  CHAIRMAN OF THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION TO INDICATE TO THE
    11  CHAIRMAN OF THE SELECT COMMITTEE ON THREE MILE ISLAND, IN
    12  WRITING WITHIN 30 DAYS FOLLOWING RECEIPT OF A COPY OF THIS
    13  RESOLUTION, THE STATUS OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS SET FORTH HEREIN;
    14  AND BE IT FURTHER
    15     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    16  the presiding officers of the House of Representatives and the
    17  Senate of the United States Congress, the President of the
    18  United States and the Director of the Nuclear Regulatory
    19  Commission.
