In the House of Representatives, October 31, 1979 1 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State University has publicly 2 announced its decision to discontinue nursing education at 3 Behrend College at the end of the 1980 spring semester; and 4 WHEREAS, Students presently enrolled in the first year of the 5 two-year associate degree program are facing uncertainty as to 6 the future of their education; and 7 WHEREAS, Behrend College offers the only associate degree 8 nursing program in the Erie area, and Behrend graduates form an 9 integral part of the local health care facilities; and 10 WHEREAS, Behrend College is the only educational institution 11 capable of offering an associate nursing degree program to Erie 12 area students at minimal cost to the student; and 13 WHEREAS, Associate nursing degree programs of the type 14 currently offered by Behrend are approved and supported by the 15 Pennsylvania Nurses Association Commission on Nursing Education; 16 and
1 WHEREAS, The Hamot Medical Center has given financial support 2 to Behrend's nursing program and has expressed a desire that 3 Pennsylvania State University continue this program; and 4 WHEREAS, An associate degree nursing program is a vital 5 component of a complete educational program for health care 6 professionals; therefore be it 7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 8 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania memorialize the Pennsylvania State 9 University to continue operation of the associate degree nursing 10 program at Behrend College; and be it further 11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the 12 Board of Trustees of Pennsylvania State University, to the 13 Governor, Dick Thornburgh and to the Secretary of Education, 14 Robert G.
