                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of August 5, 1941 (P.L.752, No.286), entitled
     2     "An act regulating and improving the civil service of certain
     3     departments and agencies of the Commonwealth; vesting in the
     4     State Civil Service Commission and a Personnel Director
     5     certain powers and duties; providing for classification of
     6     positions, adoption of compensation schedules and
     7     certification of payrolls; imposing duties upon certain
     8     officers and employes of the Commonwealth; authorizing
     9     service to other State departments or agencies and political
    10     subdivisions of the Commonwealth in matters relating to civil
    11     service; defining certain crimes and misdemeanors; imposing
    12     penalties; making certain appropriations, and repealing
    13     certain acts and parts thereof," further providing for the
    14     inclusion into the classified service of certain positions
    15     and requiring tests for certain employes within the State
    16     Transportation Commission.

    17     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    18  hereby enacts as follows:
    19     Section 1.  Subclause (14) of clause (d) of section 3, act of
    20  August 5, 1941 (P.L.752, No.286), known as the "Civil Service
    21  Act," added August 27, 1963 (P.L.1257, No.520), is amended to
    22  read:
    23     Section 3.  Definition of Terms.--In this act, unless the
    24  context otherwise clearly requires,--

     1     (d)  "Classified service" includes:
     2     * * *
     3     (14)  [The following positions in the Department of Highways:
     4  Engineers, geologists, chemists, planning specialists,
     5  statisticians, economists, geodesists, photogrammetrists,
     6  architects, landscape architects, cartographers, draftsmen and
     7  surveyors] All positions now existing or hereafter created in
     8  the State Transportation Commission including positions included
     9  in the "unclassified service" under clause (c) except the State
    10  Transportation Commissioner; and

    12     Section 2.  All personnel in the State Transportation
    13  Commission on the effective date of this act who are not in the
    14  "classified service," but who are included in the "classified
    15  service" under the provisions of this amendatory act shall,
    16  except as hereinafter provided, serve the maximum probationary
    17  period authorized under section 603 of the Civil Service Act,
    18  beginning on the effective date of this act. County maintenance
    19  superintendents and assistant county maintenance superintendents
    20  employed by the commission on the effective date of this act
    21  shall be ineligible to hold a position in the "classified
    22  service," until qualified under the provisions of the Civil
    23  Service Act, but shall be eligible for provisional appointment
    24  under section 604.
    25     Section 3.  This act shall take effect on the same day the
    26  act of                      (P.L.     , No.    ), known as the
    27  "State Transportation Commission Act," becomes effective.
