                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 24 (Education) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
     2     Statutes, providing for eligibility, notification and payment
     3     for health insurance.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  Title 24, act of November 25, 1970 (P.L.707,
     7  No.230), known as the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, is
     8  amended by adding a section to read:
     9  § 8311.  Eligibility for health insurance payments.
    10     Any superannuation annuitant, disability annuitant, or an
    11  annuitant who has 25 or more years of credited service is
    12  eligible to have the premiums for "65 Special" MEDICARE           <--
    13  SUPPLEMENTARY benefits paid by the retirement fund provided the
    14  member has authorized the board to deduct from his annuity
    15  payments the appropriate annual charges for medical, major
    16  medical and hospitalization insurance coverage.
    17     Section 2.  Section 8505(i) of Title 24 is amended to read:
    18  § 8505.  Duties of the board regarding applications and

     1           elections of members.
     2     * * *
     3     (i)  Medical insurance coverage.--Upon receipt of
     4  notification from an insurance carrier approved by the board
     5  that an annuitant who has attained age 65 has elected medical,
     6  major medical, and hospitalization insurance coverage, the board
     7  shall deduct from the annuity payments the appropriate annual
     8  charges in equal monthly installments. Such deductions shall be
     9  transmitted to the insurance carrier. The board shall also pay
    10  to the insurance carrier the premiums for the "65 Special"        <--
    11  MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTARY benefits of those annuitants who are       <--
    12  eligible under section 8311 (relating to eligibility for health
    13  insurance payments) to have such premiums paid by the board.

    15     Section 3.  Section 8508 of Title 24 is amended by adding
    16  subsections to read:
    17  § 8508.  Rights and duties of annuitants.

    19     (d)  Notification of election and payment of medical
    20  insurance.--If an annuitant who has attained age 65 and has
    21  elected medical, major medical, and hospitalization insurance
    22  coverage, he shall so notify the board and may request that the
    23  board deduct from his annuity payments the appropriate annual
    24  charges in equal monthly installments.
    25     (e)  Payment of "65 Special" MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTARY            <--
    26  BENEFITS.--Any annuitant who is eligible under Section 8311
    27  (relating to eligibility for health insurance payments) to have
    28  the premiums for the "65 Special" MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTARY          <--
    29  benefits paid by the board shall not have his annuity payments
    30  reduced on account of the "65 Special" MEDICARE SUPPLEMENTARY     <--

     2     Section 4.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
