PRINTER'S NO. 73

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF PENNSYLVANIA

HOUSE RESOLUTION

No. 6 Session of 1977

INTRODUCED BY SHUMAN, F. TAYLOR, COLE, S. E. HAYES JR., HONAMAN,
ARMSTRONG AND WENGER, JANUARY 17, 1977

REFERRED TO RULES, JANUARY 19, 1977

In the House of Representatives, January 17, 1977

1 For a century of our national existence, beginning in the
2 midst of the crisis of our American Civil War, the Congress of
3 the United States saw fit to inscribe on metal coinage the motto
4 "In God We Trust," at the urging of a Pennsylvanian, N. R.
     5 Watkinson of Ridleyville.
6 This motto, "In God We Trust," has been added to our common
7 paper currency through the urging of the Allegheny County
8 Committee of The American Legion and the sponsorship of the late
     9 Honorable Herman P. Eberharter.
10 This motto, "In God We Trust," has, by Act of Congress,
11 become the official motto of the United States of America.
12 In the past eleven years of our national existence, the
13 secular and atheistic forces in this Country have, through legal
14 methods, in the guise of protecting the minority of one, taken
15 the rights of the majority to educate and foster the virtue of
16 humility and acceptance of an obligation to a Creator and
17 Supreme Being--a greater obligation than is owed to ourselves

     1 and our Country.
2 It is fitting that this right should be made manifest in a
3 state of the United States that pioneered, through its founder
4 William Penn, in the freedom of a citizen to worship God
5 according to his conscience; therefore be it
6 RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the national motto,
7 "In God We Trust" be suitably placed in the Senate and the House
8 of the General Assembly out of respect to the teachings of its
9 Founder, and as a guide to the actions of the members of the
10 Senate and House of Representatives.
