AN ACT 1 Amending the act of June 24, 1931 (P.L.1206, No.331), entitled 2 "An act concerning townships of the first class; amending, 3 revising, consolidating, and changing the law relating 4 thereto," authorizing the appointment of police through 5 Federally funded programs without involving the civil service 6 provisions of the act. 7 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 8 hereby enacts as follows: 9 Section 1. Section 625, act of June 24, 1931 (P.L.1206, 10 No.331), known as "The First Class Township Code," reenacted and 11 amended May 27, 1949 (P.L.1955, No.569), is amended to read: 12 Section 625. Appointments of Police and Firemen.--This 13 subdivision (d) of this article shall not apply to any township 14 having a police force of less than three members or to volunteer 15 fire departments or companies employing their own operators or 16 to townships having less than three salaried operators of fire 17 apparatus or to those members of the police force who are 18 appointed on a temporary basis through a Federally funded 19 program. The subdivision (d) of this article is subject, as 20 heretofore, to the power of the township commissioners to
1 determine compensation. Hereafter, each and every appointment to 2 and promotion directly by the township shall be made only 3 according to qualifications and fitness to be ascertained by 4 examinations which shall be competitive, as hereinafter 5 provided. 6 No person shall hereafter be suspended, removed or reduced in 7 rank as a paid employe in any police force or as a paid operator 8 of fire apparatus of any township, except in accordance with the 9 provisions of this subdivision. 10 Section 2.
