                                     AN ACT

     1  To provide for an additional law judge of the court of common
     2     pleas in the thirty-first judicial district.

     3     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     4  hereby enacts as follows:
     5     Section 1.  In addition to the judges provided for in the act
     6  of January 8, 1952 (P.L.1844, No.494), entitled "An act to
     7  designate the several judicial districts of the Commonwealth, as
     8  required by the Constitution, and to provide for the election
     9  and commissioning of judges learned in the law for the said
    10  districts," an additional law judge is hereby authorized and
    11  provided for the court of common pleas of the thirty-first
    12  judicial district, who shall possess the same qualifications
    13  which are required by the Constitution and laws for the
    14  president judge of the court of common pleas of the district and
    15  who shall hold his office for a like term and by the same tenure
    16  and shall have the same power, authority and jurisdiction and
    17  shall be subject to the same duties, restrictions and penalties
    18  and shall receive the same compensation provided for by law for


     1  judges learned in the law as if the same office had been
     2  established in the time of and subject to the provisions of the
     3  act of June 1, 1956 (P.L.1959, No.657), entitled, as amended,
     4  "An act fixing the salaries and compensation of the Chief
     5  Justice and judges of the Supreme Court, the President Judge and
     6  judges of the Superior Court, the judges of the courts of common
     7  pleas, the judges of the orphans' courts, the judges of the
     8  County Court of Philadelphia and the judges of the County Court
     9  and Juvenile Court of Allegheny County, certain associate judges
    10  not learned in the law, certain state officers, and the salary
    11  and expenses of the members of the General Assembly, and
    12  repealing certain inconsistent acts."
    13     Section 2.  At the municipal election in November, 1977, the
    14  qualified electors of the thirty-first judicial district shall
    15  elect, in the same manner prescribed by law for the election of
    16  the president judge of the court of common pleas of the
    17  district, a competent person learned in the law to serve as
    18  additional law judge of the court of common pleas of the thirty-
    19  first judicial district from the first Monday in January, 1978,
    20  for a term of ten years. Vacancies in the office hereby created
    21  whether caused by death, resignation, expiration of term or
    22  otherwise shall be filled in the same manner as is required by
    23  law in case of similar vacancies in the office of president
    24  judge of the court.
    25     Section 3.  The Governor may appoint a competent person
    26  learned in the law, as additional law judge of the court of
    27  common pleas of the thirty-first judicial district, to serve
    28  until the first Monday of January, 1978.
    29     Section 4.  This act shall take effect immediately.
