In the House of Representatives, July 21, 1975 1 WHEREAS, The State of Missouri, sometimes called the "Mother 2 of the West," has played a prominent and central role in the 3 founding, expansion, and development of this country, from 4 Father Marquette and Louis Joliet's discovery of the mouth of 5 the Missouri River in 1763 to the erection of the magnificent 6 six hundred and thirty foot Gateway Arch in 1965; and 7 WHEREAS, The State of Missouri has facilitated the 8 development of and fed the people of America through the 9 agricultural production of beef, cattle, corn, hogs, milk, 10 soybeans and wheat; the mining of coal, iron ore, gravel, and 11 stone; and the manufacture of chemicals, clothing, 12 transportation equipment; and 13 WHEREAS, From its rich stock of people of African, 14 Czechoslovakian, English, French, German, Polish and Swiss 15 descent, the State of Missouri has populated this Nation with 16 such leaders in government as Harry Truman, such scientists as 17 George Washington Carver, such giants of literature as Joseph 18 Pulitzer and Mark Twain and such artists as Thomas Hart Benton;
1 therefore be it 2 RESOLVED (the Senate concurring), That the House of 3 Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania takes this 4 opportunity at the outset of the two hundredth anniversary of 5 the founding of this Nation to memorialize all people, the low 6 and the mighty, to recognize the accomplishments of the State of 7 Missouri and take heed of its motto: "Salus populi suprema lex 8 esto." -- "The welfare of the people shall be the supreme law," 9 and be it further 10 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be made available 11 for presentation to the General Assembly of the State of 12 Missouri.
