                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of August 5, 1941 (P.L.752, No.286), entitled
     2     "An act regulating and improving the civil service of certain
     3     departments and agencies of the Commonwealth; vesting in the
     4     State Civil Service Commission and a Personnel Director
     5     certain powers and duties; providing for classification of
     6     positions, adoption of compensation schedules and
     7     certification of payrolls; imposing duties upon certain
     8     officers and employes of the Commonwealth; authorizing
     9     service to other State departments or agencies and political
    10     subdivisions of the Commonwealth in matters relating to civil
    11     service; defining certain crimes and misdemeanors; imposing
    12     penalties; making certain appropriations, and repealing
    13     certain acts and parts thereof," further providing for the
    14     inclusion into the classified service of certain positions
    15     and requiring tests for certain employes within the
    16     Department of Transportation.

    17     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    18  hereby enacts as follows:
    19     Section 1.  Subclause (14) of clause (d) of section 3, act of
    20  August 5, 1941 (P.L.752, No.286), known as the "Civil Service
    21  Act," added August 27, 1963 (P.L.1257, No.520), is amended to
    22  read:
    23     Section 3.  Definition of Terms.--In this act, unless the
    24  context otherwise clearly requires,--

     1     (d)  "Classified service" includes:
     2     * * *
     3     (14)  [The following positions in the Department of Highways:
     4  Engineers, geologists, chemists, planning specialists,
     5  statisticians, economists, geodesists, photogrammetrists,
     6  architects, landscape architects, cartographers, draftsmen and
     7  surveyors] All positions now existing or hereafter created in
     8  the Department of Transportation including positions included in
     9  the "Unclassified service" under clause (c) except the head and
    10  deputy heads of the department and attorneys employed by the
    11  department; and
    12     * * *
    13     Section 2.  All personnel in the Department of Transportation
    14  on the effective date of this act who are not in the "Classified
    15  service," but who are included in the "Classified service" under
    16  the provisions of this amendatory act shall, except as
    17  hereinafter provided, serve the maximum probationary period
    18  authorized under section 603 of the Civil Service Act, beginning
    19  on the effective date of this act. County maintenance
    20  superintendents and assistant county maintenance superintendents
    21  employed by the department on the effective date of this act
    22  shall be ineligible to hold a position in the "classified
    23  service," until qualified under the provisions of the Civil
    24  Service Act, but shall be eligible for provisional appointment
    25  under section 604.
    26     Section 3.  This act shall take effect in 90 days.
