REFERRED TO TRANSPORTATION, MARCH 25, 2004

                                     AN ACT

1 Redesignating the bridge on State Route 228 which passes over
2 Interstate 79 in Cranberry Township, Butler County, as the
3 79th Infantry Division Memorial Bridge.

4 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5 hereby enacts as follows:
6 Section 1. Redesignation of bridge in Butler County.
7 (a) Findings.--The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of
8 Pennsylvania finds and declares as follows:
9 (1) The 79th Infantry Division of the United States Army
10 fought gallantly in Normandy and elsewhere during World War
    11 II.
12 (2) The 79th Infantry Division was known as the Cross of
13 Lorraine Division from the insignia they wore on their
14 shoulders. The insignia was adopted after the division
15 distinguished itself in that region of France in World War I.
16 (3) The 79th Infantry Division contained three
17 regiments, the 313th Infantry Regiment, the 314th Infantry

1 Regiment and the 315th Infantry Regiment.
2 (4) The members of the 79th Infantry Division braved
3 frigid waters and a torrent of enemy fire to land on the
4 European continent at Utah Beach and begin the long march
5 that would put an end to the tyranny of the Nazis. Sadly,
6 many members would never return home to their families.
7 (5) June 2004 marks the 60th anniversary of the
     8 division's landing in Normandy.
9 (6) It is fitting and good public policy to honor those
10 brave soldiers and thank them for their sacrifices to
    11 preserve our freedom.
    12 (b) Redesignation.--The bridge on State Route 228 which
13 passes over Interstate 79 in Cranberry Township, Butler County,
14 Department of Transportation No. BMS 10-0228-0010-1443, is
15 hereby redesignated as the 79th Infantry Division Memorial
    16 Bridge.
17 (c) Signs.--The department shall erect and maintain
18 appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge redesignated
19 in subsection (b) to traffic in both directions on the bridge.
20 These signs shall contain a reproduction of the 79th Infantry
21 Division insignia. The department shall also place an
22 appropriate marker containing the name of the bridge on both
23 sides of the bridge to be visible to traffic on Interstate 79.
    24 Section 2. Effective date.
25 This act shall take effect in 60 days.
