INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, SEPTEMBER 27, 2016
A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of September 2016 as "Brain Aneurysm
Awareness Month" and September 24, 2016, as "Brain Aneurysm
Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, An estimated 1 out of every 50 people in the United
States has a brain aneurysm; and
WHEREAS, Brain aneurysms are most likely to occur in people
between 35 and 60 years of age and there are typically no
warning signs; and
WHEREAS, Brain aneurysms are more likely to occur in women
than in men by a three to two ratio; and
WHEREAS, Various risk factors can contribute to the formation
of a brain aneurysm, including smoking, hypertension and a
family history of brain aneurysms; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 6 million people in the United States
have a brain aneurysm; and
WHEREAS, An unruptured brain aneurysm can lead to double
vision, vision loss, loss of sensation, weakness, loss of

balance, incoordination and speech problems; and
WHEREAS, A brain aneurysm is often discovered when it
ruptures and causes a subarachnoid hemorrhage; and
WHEREAS, A subarachnoid hemorrhage can lead to brain damage,
hydrocephalus, stroke and death; and
WHEREAS, Each year, more than 30,000 people in the United
States suffer from ruptured brain aneurysms and 40% of these
people die as a result; and
WHEREAS, Annually, between 3,000 and 4,500 people in the
United States with ruptured brain aneurysms die before reaching
the hospital; and
WHEREAS, A number of advancements have been made in recent
years regarding the detection of aneurysms, including the
computerized tomography scan, the magnetic resonance imaging
test and the cerebral arteriogram, and early detection can save
lives; and
WHEREAS, Various research studies are currently being
conducted in the United States in order to better understand,
prevent and treat brain aneurysms; and
WHEREAS, Brain aneurysm survivors, their families and
friends, along with families and friends who lost a loved one to
a brain aneurysm, are working tirelessly across this
Commonwealth to raise funding for those research studies; and
WHEREAS, The Pittsburgh Brain Aneurysm Run/Walk has been
established as a new resource for those efforts; and
WHEREAS, The 3rd annual event for the Pittsburgh Brain
Aneurysm Run/Walk will be held at Pittsburgh's Northshore
Riverfront Park on Saturday, September 24, 2016; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of September
2016 as "Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month" and September 24, 2016,

as "Brain Aneurysm Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize, commend and support the
organizers, volunteers and participants of the Pittsburgh Brain
Aneurysm Run/Walk and wish them great success.
