A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing September 2014 as "Hunger Action Month" in
2Pennsylvania.

3WHEREAS, September 2014 has been designated as Hunger Action
4Month to provide an opportunity for communities in the United
5States to unite to focus attention on the persistent problem of
6domestic hunger; and

7WHEREAS, According to Feeding Pennsylvania, 1.82 million
8Pennsylvanians fight hunger, including approximately 536,000
9children who are nutritionally insecure; and

10WHEREAS, The United States Department of Agriculture gathers
11information and provides statistics related to domestic hunger;
12and

13WHEREAS, Hunger is a reality for one in seven Pennsylvanians;
14and

15WHEREAS, Many United States households experience hunger and
16some people in these households frequently skip meals or eat too

1little, sometimes going without food for a whole day; and

2WHEREAS, Members of these households have lower-quality diets
3or must resort to seeking emergency food because they cannot
4always afford the food they need; and

5WHEREAS, The costs of other essentials, such as home heating,
6gasoline, housing and medical care have increased significantly,
7and for families caught in the squeeze between declining wages
8and rising costs, the food budget becomes a frequent pressure
9point; and

10WHEREAS, Utilization of emergency food assistance becomes a
11way for these families to keep food on the table while still
12paying the bills; and

13WHEREAS, Food banks, food rescue organizations, soup
14kitchens, food pantries, faith-based organizations, businesses
15and individuals are donating time, raising funds and giving food
16to help their neighbors; and

17WHEREAS, Individuals benefiting from the availability of
18donated food range from infants and toddlers, school-age
19children and adolescents to single mothers, single fathers, two-
20parent families, veterans and their families and seniors;
21therefore be it

22RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize September 2014 as "Hunger
23Action Month" in Pennsylvania.
