           C. WILLIAMS, TOMLINSON, THOMPSON, KUKOVICH, WOZNIAK, LEMMOND,
           O'PAKE, CONTI AND M. WHITE, SEPTEMBER 30, 2002

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the Philadelphia Museum of Art as the 2002
     2     Commonwealth Treasure of the Pennsylvania Historical and
     3     Museum Commission.

     4     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, located in the City
     5  of Philadelphia, has been recognized nationally and
     6  internationally as one of the world's most important and admired
     7  museums; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, opened in 1877,
     9  stands as the physical expression of Pennsylvania's most
    10  ambitious cultural aspirations; and
    11     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, considered by many
    12  to be one of the finest museums in the United States, serves to
    13  display, preserve and interpret a collection of more than
    14  300,000 works of art for the citizens of this Commonwealth, our
    15  nation and the world; and
    16     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art serves more than
    17  850,000 visitors annually from all over the world and serves
    18  countless others by sharing its collections with museums and

     1  historical organizations throughout the world through loans and
     2  touring exhibitions; and
     3     WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Museum of Art's current building,
     4  opened in 1928, has become a world-renowned landmark in the City
     5  of Philadelphia; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Greek Revival architecture of the museum
     7  dominates the skyline on the western edge of the city and the
     8  banks of the Schuylkill River; and
     9     WHEREAS, This highly visible site embodies many complex
    10  layers of meaning and significance that the museum and its
    11  priceless collections hold for the community, this Commonwealth
    12  and everyone interested in human creativity; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the Philadelphia Museum
    14  of Art as the 2002 Commonwealth Treasure of the Pennsylvania
    15  Historical and Museum Commission and honor this truly
    16  outstanding historically and culturally significant site worthy
    17  of this designation.
