           SALVATORE, LAVALLE, WENGER, BODACK, GERLACH, SLOCUM, HART,
           HUGHES, BELAN, THOMPSON, WAGNER, TOMLINSON, HELFRICK, CONTI,
           AFFLERBACH, MUSTO, PUNT, STAPLETON, MOWERY, COSTA, KUKOVICH,
           TARTAGLIONE, STOUT, SCHWARTZ, MADIGAN, WHITE, DELP, KITCHEN,
           CORMAN, KASUNIC, RHOADES, O'PAKE AND LEMMOND,

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, NOVEMBER 9, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring all Pennsylvania veterans, on the occasion of Veterans'
     2     Day, November 11, 1998, who served during war and peace.

     3     WHEREAS, In 1918, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in
     4  the eleventh month, the world rejoiced and celebrated because
     5  after four years of bitter war an armistice was signed that
     6  declared the "war to end all wars" over; and
     7     WHEREAS, November 11 was set aside as Armistice Day in the
     8  United States to remember the sacrifices men and women made
     9  during the war in order to ensure a lasting peace; and
    10     WHEREAS, On Armistice Day, soldiers who survived the war
    11  marched in a parade through their hometowns and politicians,
    12  public officials and veteran officers gave speeches and held
    13  ceremonies of thanks for the peace they had won; and
    14     WHEREAS, The Congress of the United States voted Armistice
    15  Day a legal holiday in 1938, but Americans realized that the


     1  previous war would not be the last one; and
     2     WHEREAS, World War II began the following year, and nations
     3  great and small again participated in a bloody struggle; and
     4     WHEREAS, After World War II, Armistice Day continued to be
     5  observed on November 11; and
     6     WHEREAS, In 1953 townspeople in Emporia, Kansas, called the
     7  holiday "Veterans' Day" in gratitude to the veteran in their
     8  town; and
     9     WHEREAS, Soon after, Congress passed a bill renaming the
    10  national holiday as Veterans' Day; and
    11     WHEREAS, Americans still give thanks to veterans for their
    12  service on Veterans' Day with ceremonies and speeches, and at
    13  11:00 a.m. many Americans observe a moment of silence in
    14  remembrance of those who fought and for those who gave their
    15  lives to preserve the freedoms that we now enjoy; therefore be
    16  it
    17     RESOLVED, That the Senate honor all Pennsylvania veterans on
    18  the occasion of Veterans' Day, November 11, 1998, who served
    19  during war and peace.
