        INTRODUCED BY TARTAGLIONE, KUKOVICH, KITCHEN, LAVALLE, BOSCOLA,
           CONTI, WAGNER, GORDNER, EARLL, ROBBINS, WENGER, ERICKSON,
           CORMAN, BRIGHTBILL, MOWERY, LOGAN, COSTA, ARMSTRONG, MUSTO,
           WOZNIAK, STOUT, DENT, FUMO, FERLO, O'PAKE, LEMMOND,
           TOMLINSON, WONDERLING AND SCHWARTZ, APRIL 13, 2004

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, APRIL 13, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring Pennsylvania's older citizens by observing the month of
     2     May 2004 as "Older Americans Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, For more than 40 years, the President of the United
     4  States has designated the month of May as "Older Americans
     5  Month"; and
     6     WHEREAS, In 1963, when President John F. Kennedy first
     7  established the monthlong celebration to recognize our older
     8  citizens, only 17 million Americans had reached their 65th
     9  birthdays, while today more than 35 million Americans are 65
    10  years of age or older; and
    11     WHEREAS, This year's national theme, "Aging Well, Living
    12  Well," celebrates and recognizes older Americans who are living
    13  longer, healthier and more productive lives while also improving
    14  the quality of their lives; and
    15     WHEREAS, Older persons are the pillars upon which American
    16  families have been built; and


     1     WHEREAS, "Older Americans Month" is a time to acknowledge the
     2  contributions of past and current older persons to our country;
     3  and
     4     WHEREAS, "Older Americans Month" is celebrated across the
     5  country through ceremonies, events, fairs and other activities
     6  to pay tribute to older persons in our communities; and
     7     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania proudly ranks second in the nation in
     8  the percentage of population which is 65 years of age and older;
     9  and
    10     WHEREAS, The heritage of this Commonwealth is embodied in and
    11  enriched by the older Pennsylvanians who, as part of the
    12  American family, call Pennsylvania home; and
    13     WHEREAS, Older Americans strengthen and preserve community in
    14  our Commonwealth and nation; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the Senate honor Pennsylvania's older citizens
    16  by observing the month of May 2004 as "Older Americans Month" in
    17  Pennsylvania.
