A RESOLUTION 1 Designating March 2000 as "Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of 4 cancer-related deaths in the United States; and 5 WHEREAS, Estimates show that physicians nationwide will 6 diagnose more than 130,000 new cases of colorectal cancer this 7 year; and 8 WHEREAS, More than 56,000 of those persons diagnosed will die 9 from the disease; and 10 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that 7,800 new 11 cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed among men and women 12 in Pennsylvania in 2000 and that 3,400 Pennsylvanians will die 13 from the disease this year; and 14 WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer takes such a deadly toll because 15 it usually has no identifiable symptoms and often goes 16 undetected until it is too late to treat; and 17 WHEREAS, The most effective weapon in defeating colorectal
1 cancer is early detection and treatment; and 2 WHEREAS, Only 37% of colorectal cancers are detected while 3 still localized; and 4 WHEREAS, Over 90% of those persons diagnosed while the cancer 5 is still localized survive more than five years; and 6 WHEREAS, Colorectal cancer screening should become a routine 7 part of preventive health care for anyone over 50 years of age 8 because the risk of developing the disease increases with age; 9 therefore be it 10 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate March 2000 as "Colorectal 11 Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
