A RESOLUTION 1 Observing the month of May 2001, as "Historic Preservation 2 Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The National Trust for Historic Preservation has 4 designated the week of May 13 through 19, 2001, as the 30th 5 annual "National Historic Preservation Week"; and 6 WHEREAS, In December 1999 the Commonwealth Preservation Plan 7 was released, calling for steps to be taken to: 8 (1) Educate Pennsylvanians about our heritage and its 9 value. 10 (2) Build better communities through preservation. 11 (3) Provide strong leadership at the State level; 12 and 13 WHEREAS, Historic preservation is effective for managing 14 growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride, 15 enhancing and maintaining community character and increasing 16 livability; and
1 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has instituted and Pennsylvanians have 2 utilized many means for rehabilitating historic buildings and 3 locations, including the Main Street Program, the Pennsylvania 4 History and Museum Grant Program, the Certified Local Government 5 Grant Program and the Keystone Historic Preservation Grant 6 Program; and 7 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's Heritage Parks Program consists of 11 8 designated heritage parks, making it the largest state program 9 of its kind in the nation; and 10 WHEREAS, Approximately 87,000 properties in Pennsylvania are 11 listed in the National Register of Historic Places; and 12 WHEREAS, Tourism and its revenues are drawn to the historic 13 sites of Pennsylvania; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the Senate observe the month of May 2001, as 15 "Historic Preservation Month" in Pennsylvania.
