A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of March 2009 as "Multiple Sclerosis

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, In its mission to end the devastating effects of

4

multiple sclerosis (MS) since its founding in 1946, the National

5

Multiple Sclerosis Society funds more research, provides more

6

services for people with MS, offers more professional education

7

programs and furthers more MS advocacy efforts than any other MS

8

organization in the world; and

9

WHEREAS, MS is a chronic and disabling disease of the central

10

nervous system in which the progression, severity and specific

11

symptoms cannot be foreseen; and

12

WHEREAS, Every hour of every day someone new is diagnosed

13

with MS, a disease that can erode a person's abilities and

14

hopes, halt a career and unravel the fabric of families; and

15

WHEREAS, Relying on the support of caring individuals,

businesses and foundations, the National MS Society strives to

2

improve the lives of more than 400,000 people nationwide, more

3

than 19,000 of whom make their home in Pennsylvania; and

4

WHEREAS, For 63 years, the National MS Society has provided

5

hope and help for Pennsylvanians with MS, hope through extensive

6

and promising national, international and local research

7

programs and help through client programs, which make daily life

8

better for people with MS and their families; and

9

WHEREAS, The goal of every National MS Society program is the

10

self-empowerment of the person living with MS; and

11

WHEREAS, Since 1946 the National MS Society has invested 460

12

million dollars to find the cure for MS; and

13

WHEREAS, This investment is paying off in significant

14

advances in treating MS, such as new medications, which may

15

reduce or delay future disability for people with MS; and

16

WHEREAS, While research advances have brought us closer to

17

finding the cure, much remains to be done, and services must

18

continue to be provided to persons living with MS; and

19

WHEREAS, The National MS Society is driven to serve the

20

constantly changing needs of persons with MS and their families

21

by extending essential services to all who need them; therefore

22

be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of March 2009

24

as "Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania in

25

recognition of 63 years that the National Multiple Sclerosis

26

Society has served people with multiple sclerosis.
