                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of June 23, 1931 (P.L.932, No.317), entitled
     2     "An act relating to cities of the third class; and amending,
     3     revising, and consolidating the law relating thereto,"
     4     providing for designation of fire chiefs.

     5     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     6  hereby enacts as follows:
     7     Section 1.  The act of June 23, 1931 (P.L.932, No.317), known
     8  as The Third Class City Code, reenacted and amended June 28,
     9  1951 (P.L.662, No.164), is amended by adding a section to read:
    10     Section 2101.1.  Designation of Fire Chief.--The fire chief
    11  shall be designated by the mayor and may be demoted without
    12  cause in the same manner, but not to any rank lower than the
    13  rank which he held at the time of his designation as fire chief.
    14     Section 2.  Section 2102 of the act, amended November 9, 1965
    15  (P.L.670, No.320), is amended to read:
    16     Section 2102.  Paid Bureau; Election of Officers and
    17  Companies.--When a paid fire bureau is organized by any city,
    18  the council may provide, by ordinance, for the election or


     1  appointment of the officers and companies belonging thereto, in
     2  accordance with civil service provisions where applicable, with
     3  the exception of designation of the fire chief, which shall be
     4  performed by the mayor. The minimum annual starting salary or
     5  compensation to be paid the officers and firemen by any city
     6  shall be four thousand five hundred dollars ($4,500), with
     7  minimum annual increments of three hundred dollars ($300) for
     8  the first three years of such employment. If the annual salary
     9  or compensation of any fireman employed by the city on the
    10  effective date of this amending act is less than four thousand
    11  five hundred dollars ($4,500), such salary or compensation shall
    12  be increased to four thousand five hundred dollars ($4,500), and
    13  such fireman shall receive minimum annual increments of three
    14  hundred dollars ($300) for the next three years of such
    15  employment.
    16     Section 3.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
