                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
     2     Statutes, further providing for veteran plates and placards
     3     and for exemption from registration fees.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  Section 1342(d) of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania
     7  Consolidated Statutes is amended to read:
     8  § 1342.  Veteran plates and placard.
     9     * * *
    10     (d)  Prisoner of war plate.--On the application of an ex-
    11  prisoner of war whose imprisonment while in the service of the
    12  armed forces of the United States is certified by the
    13  appropriate branch of the armed forces, the department shall
    14  issue a special registration plate designating the vehicle as


     1  belonging to an ex-prisoner of war. The registration plate shall
     2  contain the letters "POW" and such other numbers or letters as
     3  the department may determine and shall have the words "prisoner
     4  of war" in at least ten-point bold type inscribed at the bottom
     5  of the plate. If an individual is eligible for a special
     6  registration plate under this subsection and for a special
     7  registration plate under subsection (a), the special
     8  registration plate under this subsection shall include the
     9  international symbol for handicapped access. The special
    10  registration plate may be used only on one passenger vehicle or
    11  one other vehicle with a registered gross weight of not more
    12  than 9,000 pounds.

    14     Section 2.  Section 1901(c) of Title 75 is amended by adding
    15  a paragraph to read:
    16  § 1901.  Exemption of entities and vehicles from fees.

    18     (c)  Processing fee in lieu of registration fee.--No
    19  registration fee shall be charged for vehicles registered by any
    20  of the following but the department shall charge a fee of $10 to
    21  cover the costs of processing for issuing or renewing the
    22  registration:

    24         (20)  Any person who is an ex-prisoner of war. To qualify
    25     under this paragraph, the person must present a certification
    26     from the appropriate branch of the armed forces that the
    27     person was imprisoned while in the service of the armed
    28     forces of the United States.

    30     Section 3.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
