AN ACT

 

1Designating a portion of State Route 4007 in the Borough of
2Indiana, Indiana County, as the James Nance Memorial Highway.

3The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
4hereby enacts as follows:

5Section 1. James Nance Memorial Highway.

6(a) Findings.--

7(1) A native of Indiana, Pennsylvania, James Nance was
8an outstanding athlete in two sports, wrestling and football.

9(2) As a wrestler, Mr. Nance won two PIAA heavyweight
10championships in 1960 and 1961 while at Indiana High School
11and two NCAA unlimited titles at Syracuse University in 1963
12and 1965. Mr. Nance was inducted into the Pennsylvania
13Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1981.

14(3) On the football field, Mr. Nance led Syracuse to the
15Sugar Bowl and earned All-America honors. As a college
16senior, he was named Syracuse University's Athlete of the

1Year.

2(4) In a professional football career that spanned four
3teams in three leagues, the American Football League, the
4National Football League and the World Football League, Mr.
5Nance gained over 7,000 yards and averaged better than four
6yards per carry in his 10-year career.

7(5) While playing for the Boston Patriots, Mr. Nance
8became the only AFL player ever to rush for more than 1,400
9yards in a season. Nance was an American Football League All-
10Star in 1966, when he also received the league's Most
11Valuable Player award, and was an All-Star again in 1967 when
12he became the only AFL player to have consecutive seasons
13with over 1,000 yards, this time 1,216 yards.

14(6) Mr. Nance concluded his professional football career
15in 1975 with 7,408 yards and 61 touchdowns. He was inducted
16into the Patriots' Hall of Fame in 2009.

17(b) Designation.--The section of State Route 4007 in the
18Borough of Indiana, Indiana County, from Philadelphia Street to
19North Fourth Street is hereby designated the James Nance
20Memorial Highway.

21(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
22maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the highway to
23traffic in both directions on the highway.

24Section 2. Effective date.

25This act shall take effect immediately.
