AN ACT 1 Amending Title 24 (Education) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated 2 Statutes, further providing for health insurance premium 3 assistance program. 4 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 5 hereby enacts as follows: 6 Section 1. Section 8509(c) of Title 24 of the Pennsylvania 7 Consolidated Statutes is amended and the section is amended by 8 adding a subsection to read: 9 § 8509. Health insurance premium assistance program. 10 * * * 11 (c) Participating eligible annuitants.--An eligible 12 annuitant may elect to participate in the health insurance 13 premium assistance program by filing an election to be covered 14 by a health insurance carrier [approved by the board] and to 15 participate in the health insurance premium assistance program.
1 Participation in the health insurance premium assistance program 2 shall begin upon the effective date of the health insurance 3 coverage provided by a health insurance carrier [approved by the 4 board], but in no event before the effective date of retirement. 5 (d) Election to participate.--Eligible annuitants may elect 6 to participate in the health insurance premium assistance 7 program by filing an election to be covered by a health 8 insurance carrier. 9 Section 2. This act shall take effect as follows: 10 (1) The addition of 24 Pa.C.S. § 8509(d) shall take 11 effect July 1, 2001, or immediately, whichever is later. 12 (2) The remainder of this act shall take effect 13 immediately.
