                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of July 3, 1985 (P.L.164, No.45), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the prevention and reduction of premature
     3     death and disability in this Commonwealth; providing for
     4     assistance, coordination and support of the development and
     5     maintenance of a comprehensive emergency medical services
     6     system and for qualifications, eligibility and certification
     7     of emergency medical services personnel and licensing
     8     ambulance services; imposing powers and duties on the
     9     Department of Health; and making repeals," providing for
    10     recertification of emergency medical technicians and
    11     emergency medical technician-paramedics.

    12     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    13  hereby enacts as follows:
    14     Section 1.  Section 11 of the act of July 3, 1985 (P.L.164,
    15  No.45), known as the Emergency Medical Services Act, is amended
    16  by adding a subsection to read:
    17  Section 11.  Emergency medical services personnel.

    19     (l)  Recertification of emergency medical technicians and
    20  EMT-paramedics.--

     1         (1)  Certification as an emergency medical technician or
     2     EMT-paramedic shall be valid for a period of three years. An
     3     individual shall be recertified for an additional three years
     4     upon successful completion of a written and practical
     5     examination prescribed by the department. Thereafter, upon
     6     completion of six consecutive years as a certified emergency
     7     medical technician or EMT-paramedic, an individual shall have
     8     continuous certification and attend and complete programs of
     9     clinical training and accredited continuing education
    10     approved by the department.
    11         (2)  Individuals who have successfully completed a
    12     recertification examination and for any reason after a period
    13     of six consecutive years have not completed programs of
    14     clinical training and accredited continuing education shall
    15     maintain continuous certification upon completion of a
    16     refresher course of instruction approved by the department.
    17     Section 2.  The provisions of section 11(l) of the act shall
    18  be retroactive to January 1, 1990.
    19     Section 3.  This act shall take effect immediately.
