                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," providing for rural high school math
     6     and science teachers.

     7     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     8  hereby enacts as follows:
     9     Section 1.  The act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), known
    10  as the Public School Code of 1949, is amended by adding a
    11  section to read:
    12     Section 1156.  Rural High School Math and Science Teachers.--
    13  (a)  There is hereby established within the department a program
    14  to assist eligible rural public school districts with recruiting
    15  and retaining certified teachers in high school math and
    16  science.
    17     (b)  Eligible rural public school districts may receive funds
    18  from the department to pay a portion of the salaries of
    19  certified high school math and science teachers, provided that


     1  no district shall receive funding for more than three
     2  consecutive years. The amount of funds allocated to an eligible
     3  rural public school district shall be established by the
     4  department.
     5     (c)  As used in this section, the following words and phrases
     6  shall have the meanings given to them in this subsection:
     7     "Department" shall mean the Department of Education of the
     8  Commonwealth.
     9     "Eligible rural public school district" shall mean a public
    10  school district with less than 1,500 students that is located in
    11  a county defined as rural by the department. Eligibility
    12  criteria may be modified by the department from time to time as
    13  it shall deem necessary.
    14     Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2003, or
    15  immediately, whichever is later.
