           REPRESENTATIVES, AS AMENDED, JANUARY 18, 1982

                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of June 14, 1961 (P.L.324, No.188), entitled
     2     "An act relating to the establishment, operation and
     3     maintenance of the State Library and public libraries in the
     4     Commonwealth; amending, revising, consolidating and changing
     5     the laws relating thereto; imposing duties upon public
     6     officers; providing for State and local cooperation and
     7     assistance in the establishment and maintenance of libraries;
     8     prescribing penalties; and repealing existing laws,"
     9     authorizing the State Library to promote and support
    10     cooperation among the various types of libraries in
    11     Pennsylvania.

    12     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    13  hereby enacts as follows:
    14     Section 1.  The introductory paragraph of section 201, act of
    15  June 14, 1961 (P.L.324, No.188), known as "The Library Code," is
    16  amended and a clause is added to read:
    17     Section 201.  State Library and State Librarian; Powers and
    18  Duties.--The Department of [Public Instruction] Education shall
    19  have the power, and its duty shall be--

    21     (18)  To promote and support cooperation among the various

     1  types of libraries in Pennsylvania for the purpose of increasing
     2  the services and resources available through libraries, and to
     3  provide financial support for the development and maintenance of
     4  cooperative programs from funds appropriated to the State
     5  Library for the purpose of supporting interlibrary cooperative
     6  programs. IT IS THE INTENT OF THIS LEGISLATION TO PROMOTE         <--
     7  COOPERATION AMONG TYPES OF LIBRARIES, NOT TO DECREASE OR
     8  SUPPLANT THE EXISTING FINANCIAL SUPPORT OF ANY SINGLE TYPE OF
     9  LIBRARY.
    10     Section 2.  This act shall take effect immediately.
