A RESOLUTION

 

1Recognizing the Borough of Paxtang on its 100th anniversary.

2WHEREAS, The Borough of Paxtang takes its name from the
3Susquehannock Indian village of Peshtank, which means "still
4waters"; and

5WHEREAS, In the earliest years of William Penn's charter, the
6area known as Paxtang, sometimes referred to as Paxton,
7encompassed the land from the banks of the Swatara Creek,
8northward to Blue Mountain and beyond; and

9WHEREAS, From 1729 until 1785, the land was a township in
10Lancaster County; and

11WHEREAS, In 1754, much of the land was deeded to Thomas
12Rutherford whose descendants occupied it until F.H. Rohrer and
13Son, a Harrisburg realty company, established a subdivision; and

14WHEREAS, After the founding of Dauphin County, the land was
15divided into many townships, including Swatara Township, which

1included what is now known as the Borough of Paxtang; and

2WHEREAS, The Borough of Paxtang was founded on July 3, 1914,
3and incorporated the same year; and

4WHEREAS, Religion and education have been at Paxtang's
5Scotch-Irish core; and

6WHEREAS, Paxton Church was founded in 1732, making it the
7oldest Presbyterian Church in this Commonwealth; and

8WHEREAS, The borough features a sampling of American domestic
9architecture from the late 19th century and early 20th century,
10with its main thoroughfare, Paxtang Avenue, showcasing high-
11style homes; and

12WHEREAS, On July 3 through 6, 2014, the residents of Paxtang
13are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the borough's founding
14with several community events, including a dinner, parade and
15home and garden tour; therefore be it

16RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
17Borough of Paxtang on its 100th anniversary.
