A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of November 2004 as "Alzheimer's Disease 2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disorder 4 which causes progressive loss of memory and intellectual 5 function; and 6 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease was first described in 1906 and 7 has been diagnosed in millions of people ever since; and 8 WHEREAS, More than 240,000 older Pennsylvanians have 9 Alzheimer's disease or related dementia; and 10 WHEREAS, Approximately four million Americans currently
1 suffer from Alzheimer's disease, and this number is expected to 2 increase to nearly 14 million by the middle of the century; and 3 WHEREAS, One in ten persons over 65 years of age and almost 4 one-half of all persons over 85 years of age have Alzheimer's 5 disease; and 6 WHEREAS, Approximately one-half of all nursing home residents 7 suffer from Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder; and 8 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease causes severe physical, 9 emotional and financial trauma for affected individuals as well 10 as their families and friends; and 11 WHEREAS, Despite the painstaking efforts of researchers and 12 other advocates, medical science has not found a cure or 13 treatment for Alzheimer's disease; and 14 WHEREAS, The tragic effects of Alzheimer's disease have 15 spurred scientists and physicians worldwide to intensify their 16 research efforts; and 17 WHEREAS, Until research yields a cure, the public must access 18 information about Alzheimer's disease and find ways to ease the 19 burden on patients, families and caregivers; therefore be it 20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 21 month of November 2004 as "Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month" 22 in Pennsylvania and urge all citizens of this Commonwealth to 23 become better informed about the disease and its impact.
