A RESOLUTION

Honoring the United States Air Force by designating September

2

18, 2010, as "Air Force Day" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, On September 18, 1947, the United States Air Force

4

began as a separate arm of the newly created United States

5

Department of Defense with the swearing in of its first

6

secretary, Stuart Symington; and

7

WHEREAS, The Air Force was created as a service separate from

8

the United States Army and the United States Navy with the

9

passage of the National Security Act of 1947, reflecting the

10

fact that air power had been developed to a point where its

11

responsibilities were equal to those of land and sea power; and

12

WHEREAS, President Harry S. Truman signed the National

Security Act of 1947 on July 26, 1947, while flying aboard the

2

presidential plane, a Douglas VC-54C named Sacred Cow; and

3

WHEREAS, The modern Air Force began its distinguished history

4

with its origins in the United States Army Signal Corps during

5

the early years of the 20th century; and

6

WHEREAS, During World War II, air power had truly come of age

7

as American military pilots bravely and effectively fought in

8

the skies above the European and Pacific Theaters; and

9

WHEREAS, The United States Air Force subsequently played a

10

key role in countering the Communist threat during the Cold War

11

era; and

12

WHEREAS, Today's modern Air Force proudly and successfully

13

performs its mission on a global scale and its highly trained

14

service persons use state-of-the-art technology to quickly

15

engage the defense and protection of America's citizens and

16

allies; and

17

WHEREAS, Members of the United States Air Force are pledged

18

to live by the core value of "Integrity First," which includes a

19

commitment to courage, honesty, responsibility, accountability,

20

justice, openness, self-respect and humility; and

21

WHEREAS, The second core value of the United States Air

22

Force, "Service Before Self," includes rule following, respect

23

for others, discipline and self-control; and

24

WHEREAS, The third core value of the United States Air Force,

25

"Excellence in All We Do," includes a commitment to excellence

26

in the areas of product and service, personal and professional

27

life, community, resources and operations; therefore be it

28

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the United

29

States Air Force by designating September 18, 2010, as "Air

30

Force Day" in Pennsylvania.
