INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, OCTOBER 4, 2004
A RESOLUTION 1 Acknowledging and affirming the integral role of Hispanics in 2 the development of this Commonwealth and our nation and 3 designating September 15 through October 15, 2004, as 4 "Hispanic Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania. 5 WHEREAS, "Hispanic Heritage Month" is being celebrated 6 throughout this Commonwealth and our nation from September 15 7 through October 15, 2004; and 8 WHEREAS, September 15 marks the anniversary of the 9 independence of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, 10 Nicaragua; and 11 WHEREAS, Puerto Rico is a self-governing commonwealth in 12 association with the United States; and 13 WHEREAS, Mexico achieved independence on September 16 and 14 Chile on September 18; and
1 WHEREAS, Currently more than 37 million Hispanics comprise 2 over 13% of the nation's total population and are the fastest 3 growing minority group in the nation; and 4 WHEREAS, Nearly 400,000 people of Hispanic heritage reside in 5 this Commonwealth; and 6 WHEREAS, The ever-increasing number of Latino professionals, 7 artists, businessmen and businesswomen, public servants and 8 leaders are making valuable contributions to Pennsylvania and 9 the nation; and 10 WHEREAS, Hundreds of Latinos in Pennsylvania are converging 11 in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, from October 23 through 25, 12 2004, with the Pennsylvania Statewide Latino Coalition for the 13 ninth annual conference; and 14 WHEREAS, Persons of Hispanic heritage have provided this 15 Commonwealth and our nation with many prominent leaders in 16 education, science, activism, politics, national defense, music, 17 visual arts, journalism, film and television, athletics and many 18 other fields; therefore be it 19 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives acknowledge and 20 affirm the integral role of Hispanics and Latinos in the 21 development of this Commonwealth and our nation by designating 22 September 15 through October 15, 2004, as "Hispanic Heritage 23 Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it further 24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives pay respectful 25 tribute to the people of Hispanic heritage in this Commonwealth 26 during "Hispanic Heritage Month" by proudly recognizing Hispanic 27 Pennsylvanians for their love of family, hard work and community 28 and for their countless contributions to our society and 29 encourage all Pennsylvanians to observe this week with 30 appropriate recognition, affirmation, ceremonies, activities and 20040H0862R4432 - 2 -
