        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 7, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion of
     2     France and honoring the heroic efforts of the servicemen who
     3     fought and those who lost their lives on June 6, 1944, as
     4     Allied Forces stormed the beaches of Normandy.

     5     WHEREAS, On June 6, 1944, the American, British, Canadian and
     6  French Allied Forces of World War II set sail from England
     7  across the turbulent, frigid waters of the English Channel to
     8  launch an invasion of continental Europe; and


     1     WHEREAS, Three years of strategic planning produced the D-Day
     2  assault on the beaches of Normandy, France, to liberate France
     3  and overthrow Nazi Germany; and
     4     WHEREAS, On the night of June 5, 1944, more than 900 planes
     5  and 100 gliders of the United States Ninth Air Force ascended
     6  from British fields carrying parachute jumpers from the 82nd and
     7  101st Divisions; and
     8     WHEREAS, In the early hours of June 6, 1944, the huge armada
     9  of 1,796 vessels, including 931 American ships, moved across the
    10  English Channel; and
    11     WHEREAS, Approximately 150,000 soldiers, including 57,300
    12  American men, landed at Normandy and 15,000 American
    13  paratroopers dropped during D-Day; and
    14     WHEREAS, Approximately 6,000 Americans were killed or
    15  wounded, many being met with deadly machine-gun fire as they
    16  came ashore; and
    17     WHEREAS, Their faith and courageousness enabled these brave
    18  men to complete this assault, which was the beginning of the end
    19  for Hitler and the Third Reich; and
    20     WHEREAS, It is fitting to remember the sacrifice of these men
    21  on this historic occasion; therefore be it
    22     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the heroic
    23  efforts of the men who participated in the June 6, 1944, events
    24  and commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion of
    25  Normandy.
