        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           JUNE 7, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of May 2 through 8, 2004, as "Centre County
     2     Electronics Recycling Week."

     3     WHEREAS, Consumer electronics such as computers, printers,
     4  scanners, televisions, radios, stereos, VCRs, telephones and
     5  electronic games contain materials such as lead, mercury,
     6  cadmium and chromium that must be kept out of our environment;
     7  and
     8     WHEREAS, Studies indicate that most of the consumer
     9  electronics sold each year are replacing broken or outdated
    10  equipment; and
    11     WHEREAS, In 2004, 315 million computers are expected to be
    12  discarded; and
    13     WHEREAS, With proper recycling, as much as four pounds of
    14  lead can be reclaimed from the glass in a single computer

     1  monitor; and
     2     WHEREAS, The Centre County Local Emergency Planning
     3  Committee, Centre County Solid Waste Authority, Department of
     4  Environmental Protection, National Recycling Coalition, Inc.,
     5  and Dell Computers are providing the residents of Centre County
     6  a no-cost opportunity to ensure the proper recycling of consumer
     7  electronics; and
     8     WHEREAS, The Consumer Electronic Recycling Event is being
     9  held at the Centre County Solid Waste Authority, 253 Transfer
    10  Road in College Township, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, May 7,
    11  and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2004; and
    12     WHEREAS, This is the second electronic recycling event in
    13  Centre County: in 2002, 95,500 pounds of consumer electronics
    14  were collected, and after recycling only 300 pounds went to the
    15  landfill; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    17  week of May 2 through 8, 2004, as "Centre County Electronics
    18  Recycling Week" and encourage all persons in the area to check
    19  their homes and offices for consumer electronics which are ready
    20  for recycling and take them to the Centre County Solid Waste
    21  Authority on one of the dates indicated.
