| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Commemorating the 200th anniversary of the incorporation of the |
2 | Borough of Marietta. |
3 | WHEREAS, For over two centuries, the Borough of Marietta has |
4 | been nestled on the banks of the Susquehanna River in western |
5 | Lancaster County; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Formerly known as Anderson's Ferry, the Borough of |
7 | Marietta was incorporated in 1812; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Marietta prospered in the 1800s due to flourishing |
9 | river commerce on the Pennsylvania Canal and Railroad; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Iron smelting also contributed to Marietta's |
11 | prosperous economy and growing population; and |
12 | WHEREAS, In 1863, the First National Bank of Marietta became |
13 | the first chartered bank in Lancaster County and the 25th |
14 | chartered bank in the United States; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Due to its prosperity, Marietta became the home to |
2 | many mansions which hosted such esteemed guests as President |
3 | Ulysses S. Grant, President Grover Cleveland and Supreme Court |
4 | Justices; and |
5 | WHEREAS, In 1882, Dr. H. M. Alexander founded the first |
6 | commercial biological laboratory in the United States, and in |
7 | 1894 more vaccine was produced in his laboratory than in any |
8 | other laboratory in the United States; and |
9 | WHEREAS, In 1936, Marietta was devastated by the Pennsylvania |
10 | Flood; and |
11 | WHEREAS, In 1965, civic-minded individuals formed Marietta |
12 | Restoration Associates to promote the restoration and |
13 | preservation of Marietta's history and architecture; and |
14 | WHEREAS, In 1972, Hurricane Agnes devastated Marietta but |
15 | also sparked community renovation efforts; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Since Hurricane Agnes, there have been successful |
17 | revitalization efforts in Marietta which led to 48% of the |
18 | borough being listed on the National Register of Historic Places |
19 | for being a well-preserved example of a mid-19th century town; |
20 | and |
21 | WHEREAS, Four of Marietta's historic buildings have been |
22 | restored for public use, including the old town hall, the old |
23 | bank, the union meeting house and the community house; and |
24 | WHEREAS, The borough is an architecture lovers' paradise |
25 | boasting a variety of historic homes, including Victorian, |
26 | Colonial American and Gothic cottages and log cabins; and |
27 | WHEREAS, With its charming landmarks, Marietta contributes to |
28 | the rich history of this Commonwealth; therefore be it |
29 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the |
30 | 200th anniversary of the incorporation of the Borough of |
