        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 15, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of May 2008 as "Motorcycle Safety and
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The safety of all Pennsylvania motorists is an issue
     4  of enduring consequence; and
     5     WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians are encouraged to enjoy the use of
     6  motorcycles while practicing utmost safety; and
     7     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's economy benefits from more than
     8  335,000 registered motorcycles and more than 800,000 licensed
     9  motorcycle operators, all whom are required to keep their
    10  motorcycles inspected and obey laws relating to operator safety
    11  and equipment; and


     1     WHEREAS, Along with statistics on ownership and ridership,
     2  the Department of Transportation reports that more than 3,800
     3  motorcycle accidents occurred in this Commonwealth in 2006,
     4  resulting in 185 fatalities; and
     5     WHEREAS, Helmets were worn in 99 of those motorcycle
     6  fatalities; and
     7     WHEREAS, Despite inevitable incidents, motorcycle operators
     8  continue to promote highway safety and encourage other motor
     9  vehicle operators to recognize and participate in motorcycle
    10  safety training; and
    11     WHEREAS, Throughout the month of May, the Pennsylvania
    12  Motorcycle Safety Program, Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward
    13  Education of Pennsylvania (ABATE) and the Pennsylvania
    14  Motorcycle Dealers Association (PMDA) are continuing their
    15  advocacy of motorcycle safety; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    17  month of May 2008 as "Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month" in
    18  Pennsylvania.
