        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 7, 2008

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of May 2008 as "Pennsylvania One Call
     2     System Month."

     3     WHEREAS, As excavators and contractors work to keep pace with
     4  the Commonwealth's unprecedented economic development, it is
     5  important to minimize damage to underground utility lines,
     6  danger to workers and environmental pollution and loss of
     7  utility service to our citizens; and
     8     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania One Call System, Inc., a utility
     9  service information center celebrating over 36 years of
    10  continuous service to this Commonwealth, is key to preventing
    11  injuries and damage when digging; and
    12     WHEREAS, This unique service provides easy, one-call
    13  notification about construction and excavation projects which
    14  may endanger workers and jeopardize utility lines while


     1  promoting workplace and public safety, reducing underground
     2  utility damage, minimizing utility service interruptions and
     3  protecting the environment; and
     4     WHEREAS, This vital service, which began with only six
     5  utility companies in western Pennsylvania and the City of
     6  Pittsburgh, now serves more than 100,000 excavators and 3,100
     7  critical infrastructure owners throughout this Commonwealth; and
     8     WHEREAS, Each year the Pennsylvania One Call System receives
     9  more than 750,000 notification requests and transmits more than
    10  6 million notifications, providing protection to utility
    11  companies, their employees and customers; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    13  month of May 2008 as "Pennsylvania One Call System Month" and
    14  encourage all Pennsylvanians to call 811 or 1-800-242-1776
    15  before digging in order to avoid injury, to protect our
    16  environment, to prevent millions of dollars in damages and to
    17  remind diggers that three working days' notice is the law. For
