        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 14, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of April 12 through 16, 2004, as "Henry
     2     Mancini Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Enrico Henry Mancini, one of America's most
     4  successful music composers of all time, was born on April 16,
     5  1924, and would have celebrated his 80th birthday on April 16,
     6  2004; and
     7     WHEREAS, Henry Mancini was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but spent
     8  his childhood and began to develop his musical gifts in West
     9  Aliquippa, Pennsylvania; and
    10     WHEREAS, On his 18th birthday, Henry Mancini was accepted to
    11  the prestigious Julliard School of Music in New York, only to
    12  have his studies cut short when he was drafted into the Army Air
    13  Corps and assigned to a military band led by Norman Leyden; and
    14     WHEREAS, As a composer, conductor, arranger and performer,
    15  Mancini's musical legacy is extensive and diverse, including
    16  memorable songs such as "Moon River" and "Peter Gunn" and
    17  beloved film scores such as "Victor/Victoria," "The Glass


     1  Managerie," "The Pink Panther," "Days of Wine and Roses,"
     2  "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and many more; and
     3     WHEREAS, Henry Mancini was nominated for an unprecedented 72
     4  Grammy Awards, winning 20 Grammys, and was nominated for 18
     5  Academy Awards, winning four Oscars; and
     6     WHEREAS, Sadly, on June 14, 1994, his family, friends and
     7  music lovers across the world and Pennsylvania lost this great
     8  husband, father, friend and musical innovator; and
     9     WHEREAS, The United States Postal Service has chosen to honor
    10  the life and musical legacy of this great Pennsylvanian by
    11  issuing a commemorative stamp in honor of Henry Mancini; and
    12     WHEREAS, The stamp is being issued at a ceremony in Los
    13  Angeles' Music Center Plaza on April 13, 2004, and at the B.F.
    14  Jones Memorial Library in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, on April 14,
    15  2004; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the
    17  life and career of Henry Mancini and the issuance of a
    18  commemorative stamp by the United States Postal Service; and be
    19  it further
    20     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
    21  week of April 12 through 16, 2004, as "Henry Mancini Week" in
    22  Pennsylvania.
