        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           APRIL 12, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating November 11, 2004, as "Welcome Home Veterans Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, On November 11, 1918, the Germans signed the
     4  Armistice which ordered cessation of hostilities of World War I;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson
     7  proclaimed:
     8         To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will
     9         be filled with the solemn pride in the heroism of those
    10         who died in the country's service and with gratitude for

     1         the victory, both because of the thing from which it has
     2         freed us and because of the opportunity it has given
     3         America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in
     4         the councils of the nation;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, In 1938, November 11 was declared a legal holiday,
     7  "Armistice Day," in the United States to remember the sacrifices
     8  made during World War I; and
     9     WHEREAS, "Armistice Day" was declared to be a day dedicated
    10  to the cause of world peace; and
    11     WHEREAS, On May 24, 1954, the Congress of the United States
    12  and President Dwight D. Eisenhower renamed the national holiday
    13  "Veterans Day"; and
    14     WHEREAS, In October 1954 President Eisenhower proclaimed:
    15         On [Veterans Day] let us solemnly remember the sacrifices
    16         of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the
    17         air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of
    18         freedom, and to reconsecrate ourselves to the task of
    19         promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall
    20         not have been made in vain;
    21  and
    22     WHEREAS, Americans have been observing "Veterans Day" on
    23  November 11 by holding a moment of silent vigil at 11 a.m.,
    24  staging parades and conducting ceremonies in remembrance of
    25  those brave servicepersons who fought to preserve the freedom
    26  and peace we enjoy; and
    27     WHEREAS, We publicly commemorate the contributions of the
    28  thousands of Pennsylvanians serving the nation at this time;
    29  therefore be it
    30     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate

     1  November 11, 2004, as "Welcome Home Veterans Day" in
     2  Pennsylvania in recognition of all Pennsylvania veterans who
     3  have served during war and peace, encourage support and
     4  gratitude for the sacrifice they have made for the common good
     5  and urge all residents of this Commonwealth to welcome home the
     6  men and women who have been serving abroad.
