A RESOLUTION 1 Commending the National Lieutenant Governors Association for 2 supporting Project HomeSafe and as it enters its expanded 3 efforts under the new name Project ChildSafe for the 4 promotion of safe firearms handling and storage practices. 5 WHEREAS, Project ChildSafe is a nationwide program 6 administered by the National Lieutenant Governors Association to 7 promote safe firearms handling and storage practices among all 8 firearms owners through the distribution of key safety education 9 messages and free gun locking devices; and 10 WHEREAS, The program is supported by a Department of Justice 11 grant and the National Shooting Sports Foundation and is a 12 component of Project Safe Neighborhoods; and 13 WHEREAS, The goal of Project ChildSafe is to inform and 14 educate all firearms owners on key safety issues and provide 15 firearms safety kits including a gun locking device through 16 partnerships with the lieutenant governors, other state
1 officials and community leaders; and 2 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Governors, through the National 3 Lieutenant Governors Association, have been actively engaged in 4 this effort since 2001 by assisting Project HomeSafe in the 5 distribution of more than 3 million locks; and 6 WHEREAS, Of the 884,000 locks allocated to this Commonwealth 7 through the program, 780,000 have already been distributed; and 8 WHEREAS, Lieutenant Governors were cited positively in a 2002 9 report from The Future of Children for engaging at a leadership 10 level in this creative public awareness campaign regarding gun 11 safety for children and families; and 12 WHEREAS, The National Lieutenant Governors Association is 13 being considered for the national 2003 "Associations Advance 14 America" award for this campaign; therefore be it 15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commend the 16 National Lieutenant Governors Association for supporting Project 17 HomeSafe and as it enters its expanded efforts under the new 18 name Project ChildSafe for the promotion of safe firearms 19 handling and storage practices.
