A RESOLUTION

Recognizing April 16, 2010, as "National Healthcare Decisions

2

Day" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, April 16 has been recognized across the nation as

4

"National Healthcare Decisions Day"; and

5

WHEREAS, The goal of "National Healthcare Decisions Day" is

6

to inform Americans about the importance of making their health

7

care wishes known to loved ones and their care providers; and

8

WHEREAS, Making advance health care decisions is important to

9

ensure that a person's choices for end-of-life treatment are

10

known and protected; and

11

WHEREAS, Studies indicate that most Americans have not

12

exercised their right to make decisions about their health care

13

in the event they cannot speak for themselves; and

14

WHEREAS, A 2006 study conducted by the Pew Research Center

indicated that 71% of Americans had thought about their end-of-

2

life treatment preferences and 95% of Americans had heard of a

3

living will, but only 29% of Americans had a living will; and

4

WHEREAS, "National Healthcare Decisions Day" is an initiative

5

that encourages citizens to express their wishes regarding

6

health care through conversations and the completion of advanced

7

directives; and

8

WHEREAS, Since the inaugural "National Healthcare Decisions

9

Day" on April 16, 2008, more than 1 million advance directive

10

forms have been requested from the National Hospice and

11

Palliative Care Organization's Caring Connections program; and

12

WHEREAS, Support for the initiative has increased since it

13

started in 2008, and national, state and community organizations

14

have embraced the call to action to help Americans understand

15

the importance of making and documenting health care decisions;

16

therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize April

18

16, 2010, as "National Healthcare Decisions Day" in

19

Pennsylvania.
