A RESOLUTION
1Designating February 7, 2014, as "National Wear Red Day" in
2Pennsylvania.
3WHEREAS, Heart disease is the number one killer of women, yet
4is often preventable; and
5WHEREAS, Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women's
6deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute;
7and
8WHEREAS, An estimated 43 million women in the United States
9are affected by cardiovascular diseases; and
10WHEREAS, Heart disease kills more women than all forms of
11cancer combined, but is often undiagnosed; and
12WHEREAS, Ninety percent of women have one or more risk
13factors for developing heart disease, yet only one in five
1American women believes that heart disease is her greatest
2health threat; and
3WHEREAS, Women comprise only 24% of participants in all
4heart-related studies; and
5WHEREAS, Since 1984, more women than men have died each year
6from heart disease and the gap between men and women's survival
7continues to widen; and
8WHEREAS, Women are less likely to call 911 for themselves
9when experiencing symptoms of a heart attack than they are if
10someone else were having a heart attack; and
11WHEREAS, The American Heart Association's Go Red for Women
12movement has been impacting the health of women for more than
13ten years, more than 627,000 women's lives have been saved and
14330 fewer women are dying every day; and
15WHEREAS, In celebration of the 11th National Wear Red Day on
16February 7, 2014, Go Red for Women is asking all women across
17America to Go Red and speak red by doing the following:
18Get your numbers: Ask your doctor to check your blood
19pressure and cholesterol.
20Own your lifestyle: Stop smoking, lose weight, exercise and
21eat healthfully.
22Realize your risk: Women think it won't happen but heart
23disease is the cause of one in three female deaths each year.
24Educate your family: Make healthy food choices for you and
25your family and teach your kids the importance of staying
26active.
27Don't be silent: Tell every woman you know that heart disease
28is her number one killer and raise your voice at
29GoRedForWomen.org;
30therefore be it
1RESOLVED, That in recognition of the importance of the
2ongoing fight against heart disease and stroke, the House of
3Representatives designate February 7, 2014, as "National Wear
4Red Day" in Pennsylvania, and urge all citizens to show their
5support for women and the fight against heart disease by
6commemorating this day by the wearing of the color red, because
7by increasing awareness, speaking up about heart disease and
8empowering women to reduce their risk for cardiovascular
9disease, we can save thousands of lives each year.
